2. How do I involve my students in TTAR Leadership (Trained Youth Facilitators) or musical performances?
All schools whose students want to volunteer for the position of Trained Youth Facilitator (TYF), offer a musical selection, poem or be part of the conference planning, must submit the appropriate registration information to melyndamurphy@yahoo.com. Please include "TTAR: School Registration." in the subject line.
3. Who are Trained Youth Facilitators (TYF)?
Teens Talk About Racism's Trained Youth Facilitators (TYFs) are students who understand and accept the responsibilities and honor what their leadership position entails. The TTAR committee relies on the best judgment of School-Based Leaders (SBLs) to choose Trained Youth Facilitators (FYF) wisely and well, because SBLs know their students best!
The TYFs are students who exemplify student leadership through their empathy, outreach and commitment to serve their school communities. These students are thoughtful, open and interested in engaging in peer leadership. They do not have to be honors students or exhibit excellence in sports or arts. What they all have in common is a willingness to learn to lead and the attitude of a young person of courage who will stand up, in small or large ways, to create a more inclusive school community. As a School-Based Leader (SBA), you may have noticed this student be that change he/she wants to see by holding the door for others or speaking out against injustice in a room full of peers who seem not to notice. SBLs decide who the right students are and are totally in charge of inviting the student(s) they feel are best.
Another factor in the SBL selection process should be whether this student would consider this activity significantly important to engage in fully. Because of the fact that many highly-celebrated students receive so many outstanding leadership offers, those students who modestly and steadily serve are inadvertently ignored.
Clearly, the TYF needs to have the ability and confidence to engage youth in discussion, inspire participation in activities and engage with other TYFs in dialog. The TYF is frequently that wonderful student who may be known by all in the school community for outstanding participation, but may also only be known by one club advisor for his/her ongoing commitment and leadership. It is also important to remember to reach out to students because of their personal qualities, not their race, ethnicity, religion or gender identity. This work is for all of our students and we must be highly inclusive in our selection process. Anti-racism and anti-stereotyping work is the work of students of all backgrounds and it is best for schools to send leadership teams who are truly diverse and meritorious.
4. How do I appoint students to become a Trained Youth Facilitator (TYF)?
The TTAR Planning Committee needs the following, basic information as well as an electronic signature on the nomination statement below. It is vital that the student nominee read and signs the nomination document (electronically or in a printed word document sent to TTAR, TYF Nomination, Melynda Murphy Bowie, TYF Coordinator, 80 Oak Street, Teaneck, New Jersey 07666)
Trained Youth Facilitator Nomination Form
My teacher has nominated me to participate as a Trained Youth Facilitator (TYF) for Teens Talk About Racism.
I understand that it is an honor and responsibility to be chosen as a student leader in this year's Teens Talk About Racism conference (2011). As a youth leader, I agree that I will need to participate in two meetings prior to the conference (arranged according to the best availability of the other youth leaders with the youth coordinator, Ms. Melynda Murphy Bowie.) The training sessions may take place in the Office of Global Education on the Metropolitan Campus at Fairleigh Dickenson University in Teaneck or via Skype or online conferencing.
This training will prepare me for my experience as a youth leader. As a TYF, I will receive a certificate of completion as a TTAR, TYF (Trained Youth Facilitator), I further agree to participate in the full-day TTAR conference, 7:30 AM to 2:00 PM, which will take place on Wednesday, May 18th, 2011.
